How to earn $10,000 a month from 5 different places

Let's talk about how to make 10,000 a month, but first, a story.

"Well, how much did you earn last month?" my mom asked.

"I made a little & over $10,000 mom," I replied.

She inhaled sharply, took a second, and said something to the effect of "Wow Tom, that's amazing."

That was 10 months ago. Since then, I've crossed the $10,000 threshold in a month on other occasions, and I'm always in awe of the internet when I do.

I don't have much to offer people, honestly. I guess I know how to write better than most, and I really enjoy making videos.

Sometimes when these videos go viral I rake in a couple thousand dollars just from the ads. I'm getting ahead of myself. Let's see how to make 10,000 a month.

It started in 2015 for me

The truth is that since 2015 I earn money with the internet.

It took me 3 whole years to get close to making $10,000 in a single month online. In fact, I used to make most of my money as a freelancer, but I didn't make much.

I transitioned to blogging online at the end of 2016, and that's when the bacon started coming.

In December 2018, I won $10,000 online

Fast forward to the last month of 2018. Here I was sitting with $10,000 earned in a single month. If I add up enough of those months, I'd be talking six figures in a single year.

The money I earned in December came from a variety of places. Let's go into the place where they came from. Here's how to make 10,000 a month from five different places.

Writing | $1,500

Most of the time, writing for money makes up about 20% of my income every month, but this month it was 15%.

These earnings usually come from one-off freelance projects, paid blog posts, and money I earn on this very website.

In December someone approached me about writing a blog post in exchange for $450. I took it, obviously, and that increased my writing income a bit.

I also write 8-9 blog posts each month. I published maybe 3 blog posts here in December and made a good amount of money from it.

Online courses | $3,800

Normally my online course makes me between $3500 and $5000 per month if we are transparent. This month it represented 38 percent of my total earnings, or $3,800.

To take you behind the curtain a bit, my online course thrives on new email list signups. With no one new signing up to my email list, I am essentially dead in the water and will not make any money.

I write blog posts to grow my list, mostly. I can also leverage LinkedIn in some way if I wanted to, and every month I get 700-900 new email signups.

Everyone likes to say that the size of your list is the most important thing that matters. It definitely matters, don't get me wrong, but I think the most important thing is how many new people sign up to your list every day. If you can find ways to maximize that number, then you can easily earn $3,000-$4,000 per month from online courses or other products. That's a big part of learning how to make $10,000 a month with something like blogging.

Facebook Video Ads | $3,600

For those who don't know, I also make videos on Facebook from time to time. Every once in a while, a video goes viral.

Most of the time, I make about $500 a month on Facebook, but when a video goes viral, like it did in December, I make about an extra $3,000.

Facebook, to me, is a superior platform for video creation compared to Youtube for a variety of reasons, one of which is that you can make more money from ads on Facebook compared to Youtube.

Facebook also has a "share" button that, when pressed, immediately puts your video on the timelines of most of your friends. This can significantly increase views and engagement.

I usually format my videos in squares and put a title on top of them, like this!

That helps people understand what the hell I'm talking about, and I think it accounts for about 75% of my success on Facebook. Formatting is a big problem on this platform.

Your page needs 10,000 Facebook likes and 30,000 1-minute views to be approved for Facebook's ad break program, so keep that in mind before attempting to make videos on that platform.

Facebook Supporters | $300

Facebook followers are basically like followers on Patreon. Not all Pages have the option for viewers to become followers because you need 100,000 Facebook likes to qualify for the program, or something like that.

This is just another serendipitous thing that came up while making videos online. Sometimes I get free trips here in the Philippines, free products, and occasionally I get sponsored trips where people pay me to make videos about their city or province.

Basically, I donate everything I earn from my Facebook followers to charity here in the Philippines, but I still earn a good chunk of change from followers every month. Of all the things on this how to make $10,000 a month list, this has the least impact.

Youtube Ads | $700

You guessed it. I repost all my Facebook videos directly to Youtube because why not? I don't get anywhere near the reach on Youtube that I have for Facebook, but at least I get something.

You need 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 hours of watch time to become a Youtube partner and start earning money from ads on your videos.

Keep that in mind.

Training | $400

One last thing I offer sometimes is training. Every once in a while I'll make a call with someone for an hour for $150. I mainly offer writing advice, but I will also consult with someone about social media strategy and what decisions I think they should make to monetize their creativity online.

Every few months I book a few calls, but this is mostly something I do when I have the time.

How to make $10,000 a month from five different places

Ok, a quick rundown of how to make $10,000 a month from five different places.

Write in Medium — $1,500

Sell Online Courses — $3,800

Facebook Video Ads — $3,600

Facebook Followers — $300

Youtube Ads — $700

Training — $400

I'll give you some parting tips on this. I spent close to two years building a blogging business that could consistently bring me around $5,000 per month. Then I started making videos for platforms like Youtube and Facebook.

I was very lucky this month to make a viral video that raised over $3,000. This doesn't ALWAYS happen, but if I had never created an ancillary income stream like Youtube for myself that is separate from my "main" business, I never would have made anywhere near $10,000 in a month.

That is, in a nutshell, how to make $10,000 per month.

You need to create a bunch of different sources of income for yourself.

This will also help you not to drown when you have a bad month in one of your businesses. At least you have money coming from other places.

For me, creating two main sources of income (online courses and vlogging ads) helped me reach the coveted $10,000 per month mark.

I urge you to also try to create as many sources of income as possible.

Final Thoughts on How to Make Money Online

I would say it's better to stick with something until you make a sustainable income from it, and then it's better to start branching out into other areas.

For me, writing was my “source of income”, until later I started branching out into video.

And mind you, I managed to make money with Medium in two different ways. I got money from the Partner Program as well as from the email subscribers I got from the platform.

With videos, I made money on both Youtube and Facebook in ad revenue. I'm dipping twice. I guess what I'm saying is find ways to double your income streams.

I hope my transparency here can give you some ideas for your own side/online business. Here's how to earn $10,000 a month from five different places.
